Abstract

1,030,231. Burning refuse. GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION CORPORATION. Feb. 6, 1963 [March 12, 1962], No. 4804/63. Heading F4B. An aqueous slurry containing combustible organic waste is burnt in a bed of refractory material 130 which is fluidized by an inlet stream of oxygen containing gas and maintained at such a temperature that the water in the slurry is evaporated and the waste burned within the bed. The fluidized bed 130 is supported on a lower layer of coarse fire brick 130a resting on a refractory grate 131. Air is delivered to a lower chamber 102a and passes to a chamber 102b containing a burner 193 to raise the temperature of the bed 130 for starting the process. The steam and gases from the bed 130 are completely burned in an upper part 120 of greater diameter than the bed 130, and pass through a dust separator 180 (Fig. 2, not shown), to the inner tube of a heat exchanger 270 which heats the combustion air. The gases pass through fresh slurry in an evaporator 240 to a condenser and stack (Fig. 3, not shown). The slurry, which may be sewage sludge mixed with ground garbage, is passed through screens to remove oversize solids and a mixer to the evaporator 240, where a sludge containing 3-10% by weight of combustible solids is concentrated to give a sludge containing 8-25% by weight of solids. By regulating the supply of sludge and air, the temperature of the fluidized bed can be maintained at between 1,300-1,800‹ F. without the further use of the burner 193.
