Abstract
1442714 Rotary kilns R M C TRANSPORT (NEW SOUTH WALES) PTY Ltd 7 Jan 1974 [9 Jan 1973] 00647/74 Heading F4B A rotary kiln comprises a first chamber 4 and a larger affixed second chamber 5 and is characterized by the upper end wall 17 of the second chamber lying in a plane normal to the axis of the kiln so as to reflect substantial quantities of heat back into the second chamber. Material for the kiln is preheated in a bin 2 by kiln exhaust gases and then is partially processed in chamber 4 before moving into chamber 5. Chamber 5 has a fixed end wall 10 with a material exit recess 11. A burner 14 mounted in the end wall is angled so that partially burnt mixture is directed at material on the lower part of chamber 5, thus creating a carbonizing atmosphere. Reducing conditions may be assisted by introducing further combustible material through an inlet 16. Gases from chamber 5 moving into chamber 4 have further rotary movement imparted by refractory blades 18 which also assist in reflecting heat back into chamber 5. Gases from chamber 4 pass to a fixed chamber 21 where they may be treated as required before passing through flue 24 for heat exchange with incoming material in storage bin 2. In an alternative arrangement for processing mud, Fig. 3 (not shown), gases leaving the rotating chamber are further heated by a burner (45) in a chamber (27) with a top wall (36) for partially drying mud from a vat (37) before it is fed via the vat 2 into the first chamber.
