Abstract
145,129. Bloxam, A. G., (Soc. Anon. des Usines Giulini). March 21, 1919. Hardening.-The hardness and tenacity of metals, particularly aluminium and its alloys, and their ease of working with cutting-tools, axe increased by heating for a considerable length of time to a relatively low temperature below the usual annealing temperature. An aluminiumzinc alloy, after being cast or annealed at 530-550‹ C., is kept at 70‹ C. for 4 or 5 days; an aluminium-copper alloy is kept at 160‹ C. for 10 days. Bronze is kept at 500‹ C. for 5 days, and brass is kept at 300‹ C. for 3 days, or 210‹ C. for 10 days. Soft iron is kept at 300‹ C. for 50 days. The heating may be interrupted during the process to enable the metal to be shaped, whereupon the heating is continued until the final hardness is attained. Specifications 29597/09, 6485/10, 20122/13, 125,422, and 127,602 are referred to.
