Abstract

1449285 Surgical masks JOHNSON & JOHNSON 18 Dec 1973 58536/73 Heading A5T A face mask includes a body portion 10 with securing means 12, the body comprising a filtration medium of non woven fabric formed of thermoplastics filaments extending from edge to edge of the piece of fabric generally parallel to the surface and having a diameter of 14-20 microns, said fabric having a weight of 1.4-1.8 oz/sq. yd., a thickness of 0.01-0.02 ins, a void volume of about 85% and being substantially free of binder. The filtration medium (22) Fig. 4 (not shown) may have on each side a layer of a non-woven facing fabric (21, 23) of weight 200-400 grains/ sq. yd. which is bonded with a thermoplastics binder. The facing fabric and the filtration medium are preferably bonded together at points 14, constituting less than 1% of the total surface area of the mask, and the mask is formed by folding the material into pleats (17, 18, 19), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), a soft metal nose clip 11 and seam binding 13 being provided. The filtration medium may be made of poly(ethylene terephthalate) by spinning the filaments, applying an electrostatic charge to separate them, arranging them in parallel relationship, and self-bonding by pressure.
