Abstract

1398244 Flexible abrasive products MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 4 April 1973 [5 April 1972] 16223/73 Heading C4 [Also in Division C3] A low-density abrasive product having abrasive granules bonded throughout a lofty, porous, compressible, non-woven fibrous structure having interconnected three-dimensionally extending voids which constitute the majority of the volume thereof, and having the fibres bonded to each other and the abrasive granules bonded to the fibres by a resinous binder, either or both of the binders being a polyisocyanurate resin having a hardness of at least 50 Shore D and at least, per 1000 grams of resin, 0À5 gram equivalent of isocyanurate and at least 1À3 gram equivalent of urethane and isocyanurate combined, the resulting low density abrasive thereby having extended wear life and reduced tendency to smear compared with similar products bonded with phenolic resins. Numerous suitable isocyanurate resin systems are described. The non-woven web may be # inch thick and weigh 60 grains per 24 square inches and be formed from a 60 denier crimp set nylon fibre which is needle tacked into 36 grains of 6, 6 nylon scrim having about 6 threads per inch in both warp and fell directions. The abrasive grains may be aluminium oxide or silicon carbide.
