Abstract
1448468 Carbon fibres JAPAN EXLAN CO Ltd 4 Dec 1973 [9 Dec 1972] 56215/73 Heading C1A A process for the production of carbon fibres comprises: (a) treating an acrylonitrile fibre with orthonitrophenol at a temperature from 150-250‹ C. ; (b) preoxidizing the acrylonitrile fibre by heating at a temperature below 400‹ C. ; (c) therafter carbonizing or graphitizing the preoxidized fibre at a temperature above 800‹ C. Step (a) may be carried out in a medium such as silicone oil or a PTFE oil, and a catalyst may be present, which is at least one of transition metal oxides, transition metal carbonates, Raney nickel, nickel-alumina, MgO and MgCO 3 . Step (b) may be carried out in a phenol vapour and/or oxygen containing atmosphere.
