Abstract
An improved process is provided for the production of a continuous length of a graphitic fibrous material through the catalysis of the graphitization reaction. While a continuous length of fibrous material capable of undergoing graphitization is continuously passed through a heating zone provided with an inert gaseous atmosphere having a maximum temperature of at least 2,000 DEG C., at least one gaseous stream containing a catalytic quantity of a volatile alkyl borate in vapor form which is capable of catalyzing the graphitization reaction is introduced into the heating zone.
