Abstract

An improved process for the manufacture of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene comprises the dehydrochlorination of benzene hexachloride by contacting it at an elevated temperature with a catalyst comprising elementary carbon having a high surface-to-volume ratio characterized in that the catalyst is lignite activated carbon. The catalyst is prepared by heating the lignite to elevated temperatures in the absence of sufficient oxygen to convert the material to carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide. Reaction temperatures of about 200 DEG to about 450 DEG C. are referred to. The pressure may be atmospheric, or as low as about 100 mm. or as high as 3 or 4 atmospheres. In examples, benzene hexachloride vapour (mixed with 1,2,3- and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzenes, to decrease the space velocity of the benzene hexachloride and minimize carbonization) is passed over activated lignite catalyst heated to 350 DEG C. and the catalyst life compared with that of charcoal and ordinary activated carbon catalysts.
