Abstract

1448370 Removing hydrocarbons from a gas ALUMINIUM CO OF AMERICA 17 Sept 1973 [21 Sept 1972] 43554/73 Headings B1B and B1C Undesirable hydrocarbons are removed from a gas by (a) fluidising or entraining solid particles with a fluidising medium that is substantially free of hydrocarbons that would otherwise be deposited on the particles during the process, (b) maintaining the particles at a temperature not exceeding the condensation temperature of said hydrocarbons (c) introducing said hydrocarbon-contaminated gas into the zone occupied by the suspended particles at a point spaced from the entry point of the fluidising medium and at a temperature exceeding the condensation of said hydrocarbons; and (d) removing said hydrocarbons from said contaminated gas through deposition on said particles. The hydrocarbons may comprise bituminous material of more than 5 carbon atoms and be present in gas emitted upon baking carbonaceous electrodes bonded with pitch. The particles may be alumina, carbon, sand, calcium carbonate or silica, and may be maintained at <125‹C by a water cooled heat exchanger in the zone of fluidised particles or by introducing water directly into bed 14 as described in application (Specification No. 1448369). The hydrocarbon contaminated gas may be introduced through a nozzle spaced from the wall of the chamber containing the fluidised particles and maintained above the condensation temperature by heating or insulating the nozzle.
