Abstract
Installation for treatment of a strip of steel in a continuous treatment line having a high treatment rate (e.g. 50 tonnes/hr) comprising a horizontal direct heating furnace and a following vertical furnace comprosing (a) a radiation heating and redn. zone, (b) a slow cooling zone, (c) a rapid cooling zone and (d) a controlled cooling zone, is characterised in that the two furnaces are connected by a constricted region in which are provided devices for removing or expelling foreign matter carried on the strip, and for inhibiting mixt. of the gases in the two furnaces. In a refractory brkck or bits of linign material were to fall from the wall of the first furnace onto the strip, it would be collected before reaching the second furnace, while the atmosphere of the second chamber remains unpolluted by gas from the first.
