Abstract
1446954 Ion exchange INTERATOM INTERNATIONALE ATROMREAKTORBAU GmbH 11 Oct 1973 [14 Oct 1972] 47634/73 Heading B1J Fluid purification apparatus comprises a generally-cylindrical housing, having an inlet and an outlet, and a regenerative heat exchanger fitted in the housing at one axial end thereof, there being defined within the housing at the opposite axial end thereof a purifier space, for accommodating purifying means when the apparatus is in use, and the apparatus further comprising an after cooler, arranged in the housing between the said purifier space and the regenerative heat exchanger, and a pump mounted between the regenerative heat exchanger and the after cooler and operable, when the apparatus is in use, to cause fluid, received thereby from the said inlet by way of a primary flow-path of the regenerative heat exchanger, to flow through the after cooler to the purifier space, where impurities are removed from the fluid by the purifying means, and to return thence to the regenerative heat exchanger so as to pass through a secondary flow-path thereof to the said outlet. In the embodiment shown, fluid to be purified which may be the coolant for a nuclear reactor flows upwards through heat exchanger 4, pump 12 and after-cooler 11, then up through bed 18 of ion exchange resin, and down via annular space 10, back through the heat exchanger to the exit. If desired the resin can be in the annular space so that the liquid flows therethrough downwards. The bed 18 may be contained in a removable cartridge.
