Abstract
1441290 Mass spectrometers NIHON DENSHI KK 18 Dec 1973 [18 Dec 1972] 58665/73 Heading H1D A multiple beam mass spectrometer comprises a plurality of ion sources 1, 2 supplied from 9 with a respective ion accelerating voltages which periodically, at least, differ under the control of a pulse generator 8, electrodes 3, 4 for directing the ion beams to a common path at slit 11, means 13 for electrostatically separating the ions according to their energy, the beam emerging from slit 16 being a time divided multiplex beam as a result of the periodic variations in the ion source accelerating voltages. This emergent beam is then magnetically analysed at 14 according to the ion mass-charge ratios, the analysed ions then being detected at 19 to give a signal which is processed at 23 to separate the components of the multiplex signal. The accelerating voltages applied to the ion sources can be in antiphase, or one can be held constant. The emergence of ions from the sources can be prevented during the time when the accelerating voltages are being charged. The power source 15 of the electrostatic analyser 13 can also be connected to the pulse generator 8, Fig. 2 (not shown). It is stated that this improves the focussing and reduces aberrations.
