Abstract
1439328 Pistons; cylinders WELLWORTHY Ltd 25 Oct 1973 [28 July 1972] 35285/72 Heading F2T A piston comprises a body 10 and a crown 16 detachably connected together and defining a groove 25 in which is housed a continuous, i.e. unsplit, piston ring 24 capable of operating at a temperature of 900‹ to 1000‹ C. and has a coefficient of thermal expansion substantially less than, preferably one quarter to one fifth, that of the material of the co-operating cylinder, e.g. cast iron. The ring 24 is of a ceramic material, e.g. tungsten carbide, silicon carbide or, preferably, silicon nitride. The body 10 is of aluminium alloy and the crown 16, which may be of nickel-chromium alloy, is secured thereto by a steel ring 20 and nut 21. The coefficients of thermal expansion of the ring 24 and cylinder are so selected as to maintain a close running clearance in the cylinder under all engine operating conditions.
