Abstract

1320264 Pistons KARL SCHMIDT GmbH 19 April 1971 [18 April 1970] 23841/71 Heading F2T A light metal alloy piston is reinforced by pressed blocks of fibres having a diameter of 1 to 100 microns and an ultimate tensile stress of one and a half to three times the ultimate tensile stress of the light metal alloy, the blocks being embedded adjacent the top land and at least the ring grooves between the head and the gudgeon pin bosses, near the inside surface of the piston, and adjacent any integrally cast cooling ducts and in those regions of the piston which, in use, bound the combustion chamber. The fibres are preferably 10 to 25 microns in diameter and may be of graphite, silicon, carbide, alumina, austenitic steel, boron, boron carbide, silica, tungsten, molybdenum, niobium and tantalum. The fibre content of the piston is preferably 40 to 60% by volume.
