Abstract
1323685 Pressure casting machines GKN GROUP SERVICES Ltd 15 Oct 1970 [25 Oct 1969] 52378/69 Heading B3F The shot duct 14 of a die casting machine has a lining 21 and a casing 22, the external surface of the lining and the internal surface of the casing being tapered so that the lining and casing are assembled together as a press fit. The casing may be shrunk on to the lining whilst the casing is raised to a high temperature, the arrangement being such that, at the working temperature, the lining is under radial compression by the casing. The liner may be made of a ceramic e.g. silicon nitride, silicon carbide or zirconia, or a cement material and may be formed of a plurality of components of different materials selected to withstand the different conditions encountered at different positions along the length of the shot duct. The casing 22 may be made of steel and is held in place by a component 26 which is secured to a component 23 by screws 29. The apparatus may be used for casting iron or steel at temperatures in the range 1300 to 1600 C. and at pressures between 5000 and 6000 lbs per square inch, the dies 11 and 12 preferably being coated with graphite suspended in a suitable carrier or carbon black deposited from an acetylene torch prior to casting.
