Abstract
1435633 Heat transfer devices S OI 1 May 1974 [16 May 1973] 19014/74 Heading F4U [Also in Divisions D1 and H5] Apparatus for heating synthetic fibre yarn 14 comprises an elongate closed evacuated vessel 2 provided with a heat exchange surface 1 and which is partially filled with a heat-vapourizable liquid 6, an electrical heater 7 within, and extending upwardly from the lower end of, the vessel 2 for heating the liquid 6 to vapourize the same to heat the surface 1, and a liquid permeable porous body 4 of heat-conducting material extending around the heater 7. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, the heat exchange surface 1 comprises a yarn contacting plate having a curved surface and optionally a groove formed therein for the passage of the yarn 14. The heater 7 is surrounded by a reticulate mass 4 of fine metal wool and is supported by a metal fitting 5. To control the temperature, a narrow tube 8 extends to a bellows 9 responding to variations of vapour pressure in the vessel 2 to activate an electric converter 10 for turning on or off the electrical source of the heater 7. The upper portion of the vessel 2 communicates with a header 11 through a pipe 12 having a throttle 14 therein. A tube 13 extends from the header 11 into the liquid 6. In use, the large heating area formed by the surface area of the wires of the mass 4 causes a large amount of heat conducted from the heater 7 to be transferred to the liquid 6 to effect vapourization thereof. In a modification, Fig. 4, the header 11 has a rectangular cross-section and is formed at the top of the vesesl 2. An orifice 14 is formed as a throttle. Two grooves (15), Fig. 5 (not shown), are formed for the passage of the yarn. In another modification, Fig. 6, the header 11 has an upwardly projecting portion 16 from which extends a purge pipe 17 having a closed end 18.
