Abstract

1435132 Heat pipes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 April 1973 [4 May 1972] 20377/73 Heading F4U A heat transfer device comprises a plurality of parallel heat pipes 10 arranged around a heating chamber 2. As shown in Fig. 3a, the heat pipes 10 are located in holders 11 and are provided with capillary structures 4 in the form of grooves, a gauze layer, glass fibre or a porous ceramic structure. The device is provided with an insulating layer 8 and with an electrical heater 7. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 (not shown) the heat pipes are wickless and are formed as bores in the wall of a tubular body of chromium-nickel steel. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the heat pipes are interconnected at one end and the heat source is a high frequency induction coil. As shown in Fig. 5a, the heat pipes are formed as bores 3 in a tubular body 1 and communicate with auxiliary tubes arranged in a ring about the body 1 to constitute an evaporator 6 surrounded by an induction coil 24. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the auxiliary tubes are located at one end of the body 1. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, the bores 3 communicate via a ring duct 30 and a duct 50 with a gas buffer reservoir 51 containing argon forming an interface with the sodium vapour at the area 54, which interface is displaceable whereby the inner wall 5 remains at a constant temperature in spite of variations in the supply of heat. A cooling coil 55 through which water may flow may be provided around the duct 50.
