Abstract

1521231 Induction heated furnaces COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE SA 5 Jan 1977 [22 Jan 1976] 166/77 Heading F4B [Also in Division H5] Induction furnace for use at high temperatures (e.g. 2,000‹ C.) has a tubular (graphite) susceptor 1 as heating element protected in use by inert gas in a toroidal chamber 22, the gas being supplied at such a pressure that it escapes through the touching surfaces (e.g. 17) between the coaxial plates 8, 18 and tubes 6, 21 defining the chamber, the plates having openings 14, 19 communicating with the bore of the inner tube 21 for passage of objects to be heated. Thermal insulation is provided by porous alumina tube 16. Chamber defining elements 8, 18, 6, 21 and susceptor supports 11, 12 are of silica. Current at 600 KHz or 20 KHz and 4 Kw passes through water-cooled tubular coil 2. The furnace may be used for drawing optical fibres or for vapour phase deposition on silica tubes.
