Abstract

990,415. Electric furnaces. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. June 16, 1961 [June 27, 1960], No. 21797/61. Heading H5H. A high temperature electrical resistance furnace comprises a high temperature-resistant hollow muffle 10 having openings 31 therethrough, an isolated furnace chamber 32 in the interior of the muffle, at least one electrical resistance heating element 47 removably positioned in the interior of the muffle in heat transfer relationship to the furnace chamber and slidably extending through the openings beyond the exterior of the muffle and supply means 56 for providing an inert atmosphere in the muffle in surrounding relationship to the heating element whereby the atmosphere at least partially drains off from around the ends of the heating elements through the openings. The muffle is supported within a gas-tight casing 11 of sheet steel, and a number of heating elements are provided in equal circumferentially and radially spaced relationship to the furnace chamber. In a specific example adapted for operation up to 1850‹ C., the heating elements are of silicon carbide, the muffle is of graphite, the furnace chamber is of high density alumina and the inert gas nitrogen, argon or helium.
