Abstract
1435497 Water-repellent bonded non-woven fabric; testing water repellency JOHNSON & JOHNSON 25 June 1973 [12 June 1972] 27263/72 Headings D1R and D1S A disposable nappy liner comprises a waterrepellent nonwoven fabric having a pattern of holes therethrough and bonded with a water-repellent binder composition. Preferably the binder composition contains a wax, fluorocarbon or silicone water repellent. The fibres are preferably viscose rayon, cotton or polypropylene of length 2 to 5cm and denier 1.5 to 3. The fabric is formed by carding, air laying or wet laying, rearranged by streams of water to form a bundled web having 400 holes per square inch and dewatered by suction. The web is then bonded continuously over the fabric or printed in spaced areas by a rotograve roller. The binder may be a self-crosslinking polyacrylate or vinyl acetate/ ethyl acrylate copolymer, plasticised, crosslinking vinyl acetate, styrene / butadiene copolymer or a copolymer of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or ethylene. The amount of binder is preferably 10 to 30% by weight of the fabric which weighs 15 to 50 g/m<2>. The water-repellent nature of the fabric is tested by placing the fabric over 4 plies of nappy and adding a 25cm diameter plastic disk having a central 1 cm diameter hole. The stem of a funnel is fitted into the hole and 50 ml of coloured water poured into the funnel.
