Abstract

1432356 Electroslag refining process BRITISH STEEL CORP 23 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 39828/72 Heading B3F In an electroslag refining process for producing an ingot which varies in composition across its width, the mould 1 is provided with a metallic barrier 8 which divides the molten metal pool into at least two portions 11 and 13 respectively. The barrier 8 melts at least partially to form a fusion bond with the metal of the adjacent pool portions. The electrodes 3 and 4 may be the same or different in composition; in the former case the barrier will be of a different composition to that of the electrodes. The barrier may be lowered into metal pool by rollers 16 and may be cooled by passing water through the rollers. It may be provided with small channels (15) to permit the flow of molten slag from one side of the barrier to the other.
