Abstract

1289042 Zone refining UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 3 Feb 1970 [3 March 1969] 5164/70 Heading B1S [Also in Division B3] A single crystal directionally solidified article is manufactured in a mould comprising a water-cooled chill plate 10 and a ceramic lining 12 in a crucible 14. A single crystal 11 is located in a ceramic block 17 with its crystal axes orientated in the desired direction of growth of the article to be cast. A consumable electrode 18 is brought above the crystal and an arc struck between the crystal and electrode which partially melts the crystal and begins to melt the electrode. As molten alloy is melted from the electrode, upward solidification is induced in the cast article by cooling the chill plate. If desired, the crucible 14 may be surrounded by a cooling water jacket.
