Abstract
1,177,387. Processes for casting composite ingots; moulds. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 April, 1968 [19 April, 1967], No. 17986/67. Heading B3F. To produce an ingot 14 having a radially varying compositional analysis (e.g. for making a steel roll with a wear-resisting outer zone and a relatively soft core or a 0À6% C outer zone and a 0À15% C core), an electroslag process employs a large central electrode 10 and at least one surrounding ring of smaller electrodes 11 of different composition all of which are melted. The central electrode 10 may be connected to a single phase supply and the outer electrodes 11 to a three-phase supply, the latter being connected so that rotation of the slag 12 and molten metal 13 is enhanced or inhibited. All the electrodes may be connected in parallel with a single-phase supply. Cooling water flows down the mould 1 from a channel or header ring 3 to a trough 4 on a water-cooled base 2 and having an inner trough 7 in which the water is circulated by a further flow from a pipe 8, as described in Specification 1,166,246. The slag may be melted in the mould or introduced when molten as described in Specification 1,150,201.
