Abstract

1430082 Channel induction furnaces ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 7 May 1973 [23 Feb 1972] 8422/72 Heading H5H A channel induction furnace (e.g. for melting glass) has three closed ring electromagnetic cores 15, 17, 17 surrounding the channel 12, 13, the cores being in parallel planes, central core 15 having an energizing winding 16, the outer cores 17 serving in use to increase the reactance of the "secondary" loop of the heated material, in the furnace and channel. The side cores 17 may have windings (22, Fig. 3, not shown) through which an adjustable D.C. is passed in use, the magnetic saturation of these cores and the ratio of reactance to resistance of the loop of heated material being thereby controllable. Susceptor elements (e.g. molybdenum sheets or rods) may be placed in the channel to reduce resistance by providing a preferential current path. The channel may be vertically arranged on a side of the furnace.
