Abstract

1,142,132. Induction heating. BLACK CLAWSON CO. 14 Feb., 1966 [15 Feb., 1965], No. 6406/66. Heading H5H. An induction heater for apparatus in which plastics material is pelletized, extruded or otherwise shaped, comprises a multiturn coil formed of anodized A1 strip, and means for electrically isolating the coil from the apparatus. The coil 25 is wound on a ceramic or asbestos-cement spool-shaped former 20 encircling the barrel 10 of a plastics material extruder. Between the former and the barrel a quench chamber 15 is formed by a stainless steel sheet having ends welded to the barrel and is cooled by water passing between ducts 16, 17. The coil is surrounded by a flux guide 30 consisting of a plurality of turns of transformer steel which may be split at (31), Fig. 3 (not shown), to reduce eddy currents. The guide 30 and coil 25 may be insulated by fibreglass tape impregnated with silicone and mica sheet. The inductor coil may have a plurality of turns and layers and be wound from a number of strips or foil in parallel. Alternatively, the coil may be mounted in an annular cavity in the extruder.
