Abstract

1426463 Welding by pressure HILTI AG 17 July 1973 [7 Aug 1972] 34096/73 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] A condenser discharge stud-welding apparatus comprises a welding pistol, a welding currentsupply unit including a condenser battery and two flexible conductors connecting the unit with the pistol and, in use, which the work to which the stud is to be welded, the conductors being fixed relatively to one another over a major part of their lengths. The fixing of the cables relatively to one another provides more constant electrical valves and produces improved welds while allowing easier handling of the cables. The welding current cables 1, 2, Fig. 1b, each having a stranded core 3 and an insulating sheath 4, may be held together by spaced clips 5 of synthetic plastics material. A multi-core control cable may be held between the cables 1, 2 in the clips or the two cables 1, 2 and the control cable 12, Fig. 3, may be held in a triangular relationship in clips. In a modification the insulation 6, Fig. 4b, of synthetic plastics material or rubber encloses the cores 3 and also connects them together by means of a web 7 which may be perforated. A three core control cable may be embedded in the web with the three cores in line or in triangular relationship. In another embodiment the welding current conductors are arranged in coaxial manner with insulation between the two conductors and over the outer conductor. In a modification a control cable may form one innermost member of a coaxial cable wherein both current conductors are annular. Sets of cables of different lengths may be provided and to compensate for different inductance values in the welding current circuit compensating components may be provided in the circuit by means of change-over mechanisms in sockets into which plug members on the cables are plugged to actuate the change over mechanisms.
