Abstract
906,695. Cables. OKONITE CO. Sept. 1, 1958 [Sept. 19, 1957], No. 27972/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 36. A stranded A.C. cable for heavy duty comprises a plurality of lengths joined end to end, each length having at least three helically laid conductor elements occupying different areas of the cable cross-section, at least two of them being at different radial distances from the cable axis, the conductor elements being mutually insulated except at the cable terminals where they are interconnected, and at least two of the elements being transposed at each joint in such a way that all of the elemental paths have substantially the same A.C. resistance over the whole length of the cable within its normal operating conditions. The conductor elements may all be concentric, or some of them may be segmental or grouped in other arrangements (Figs. 1-4, not shown). Cooling ducts may be provided, either centrally or peripherally in contact with the conductor. In order that the joints shall present a smooth contour for the application of the cable insulation they may be encased in a shaped copper sleeve which is soldered to the outer conductor element at one side of the joint and insulated therefrom at the other (Fig. 7, not shown). The sleeve may be filled with epoxy resin. The conductor strands may be compacted; inter strand and inter-element insulation may be e.g. paper, an oxide layer or varnished fabric. The cable may be screened and sheathed. Specification 906,696 is referred to.
