Abstract
1425678 Klystrons NIPPON ELECTRIC CO Ltd 21 May 1974 [24 May 1973] 22711/74 Heading H1D A wide-bond multicavity klystron includes an input circuit section in which a beam accelerating potential is applied across at least one interaction gap, permitting the use of a relatively low Q input cavity; an intermediate bunching cavity circuit tuned to a frequency above the centre frequency of the input circuit band; and an output cavity tuned to that centre frequency. As shown, accelerating potentials E 3 and E 4 -e.g. 1 kV and 4À65 kV, respectively-are applied across the interaction gaps 11 and 15, the drift tubes 4 and 12 being D.C. insulated from, but H.F. coupled to, the respective cavities 9 and 13 by choke structures 10 and 14. The arrangement permits the use of a low Q input cavity 9 fed by a wideband circuit 7. To enhance conversion efficiency, the second and third cavities are detuned by a few per cent above the centre frequency, and bunching is increased by successive shortening of the drift tubes i.e. L3 is less than L2. In a further embodiment, (Fig. 2, not shown) the interaction gap (42) of the second cavity (43), but not that of the first cavity (31), is biased (by E7), and the second cavity is also coupled to a matched load (47) via a wide-band circuit (46), to lower its Q and increase its bandwidth.
