Abstract
1423873 Matrix displays NCR CORP 8 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 37583/73 Heading G5C A display system comprises a matrix of gas discharge cells with crossed conductor arrays insulated from the gas, means for applying to a selected column conductor first signals whereby voltages of a first polarity # 1 are applied across cells in the selected column in a series of first time intervals, means for applying to selected row conductors second signals whereby voltages of a second polarity # 2 are applied across cells in the selected rows in a series of second time intervals, alternating with the first intervals, means for applying to non- selected column conductors auxiliary waveforms such that zero voltage is applied to cells at each junction of a selected row and a non- selected column during the second time intervals whereby cells at the junctions of selected rows and columns are ignited but ignition of other cells is inhibited. In one embodiment Figs. 4A-4E (not shown) each column is selected sequentially for a period during which voltage pulses # 1 are applied to the selected column and pulses # 2 are applied to the remaining columns and to selected rows. A steady potential of the same magnitude 5V is applied to unselected rows. The magnitude is sufficient to cause a discharge in the absence of wall charge. In another embodiment the pulses # 2 on unselected columns are replaced by zero voltage. Driving circuits include NPN transistor switches and a two phase generator providing pulses # 1 and # 2 .
