Abstract
1267179 Matrix displays NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO 28 July 1970 [4 Aug 1969] 36376/70 Index G4H 35B 3C 6A 6B 7B 9E BD 14B [ Also in Divisions H1 and H2] A display system comprises a plurality of gas discharge cells each comprising opposed walls of insulating material, a gas between the walls and first and second electrodes on the outside surfaces of the walls, the second electrodes being interconnected and a control circuit to apply alternately ignition voltages of a first polarity across selected cells and ignition voltages of a second polarity across all of the cells. On ignition wall charges form and only if a voltage of opposite polarity is applied will that voltage produce a further discharge, in the case of non- selected cells the wall charges oppose the ignition voltage and prevent further discharge. A display panel comprises six characters each in the form of a figure of eight made up of seven cells. The cells are connected across X, Y conductors 19, 20 the cells of each character being arranged in one row. The conductors are also connected to transistors 23a...and 33a biased by AND gates 25a...and 36a...operated by the output of a pulse generator 27 and a series input-parallel output buffer 28 connected to a circulating shift register 29. Gates 36a...are connected to the generator via a delay line 37 and to a character counter 38. By actuating selected gates 25, 36 corresponding transistors become conducting and their conductors 19, 20 connected to earth so that a pulse is applied to one side of selected cells by a voltage source 31 via resistors 30, 40. In operation 160 Ásec. pulses are applied to successive gates 36 by counter 38. The generator 27 and delay line 37 supply 8 Á second pulses alternately to gates 25, 36 and the buffer 28 applies signals to selected gates 25 to provide the desired digit. Gates 25a, 36a are turned on for example and transistors 23a, 33a become conducting alternately to ignite only selected cells in each row, e.g. 21a during the 160 Ásec. period. The process is repeated for each row and then sequence repeated so that the six digits are seen due to retention of vision. In a modified circuit the resistors 30, 40 are replaced by diodes.
