Abstract

1479894 Matrix displays OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 21 June 1974 [22 June 1973] 27576/74 Heading G5C A gas discharge display/memory panel with crossed conductor arrays insulated from the gas comprises cells grouped sufficiently closely together that when a cell in one group is energized a discharge is instituted in the other cells of the group but turning one cell off does not result in all of the other cells turning off; all the cells in a group must be erased together. These operations constitute OR and AND functions. An AND function for a write operation can be obtained by inverting the group as described in Specification 1,479,667. The sustain voltage is shifted to invert the state of the cells from off to on. Erase pulses are applied to all the cells and the sustain voltage again shifted to re-invert the cells when off cells turn to the on state. Using the inversion method erase signals are provided by P-N-P and N-P-N transistor pulses which earth conductors are appropriate times coincident with the sustain pulses. The conductors of each array are arranged in pairs x 1 , a jx 1b ... y 1a , y 1b ... the four intersections forming a display element 21. In other panels the elements may be defined by the intersection of one x conductor and two y conductors or three x and three y conductors. It is stated that the cells of a group may be arranged to form letters and numerals. In a display system Fig. 6 (not shown) external connections are taken to the four edges of the panel, groups of conductors are interconnected and supplied via four suitably poled diodes with sustain voltages. The system is inverted by interchanging the potentials to the x and y conductors. Writing is carried out by inverting the cells, energizing the four pulses connected to a selected group to produce coincident erase pulses at a unique location, then reinverting. NOR and NAND operations are referred to.
