Abstract

1373301 Matrix displays OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 13 Dec 1971 [11 Dec 1970] 57722/71 Heading G5C Differential line ageing in a matrix-type display panel having linear column and row conductor arrays on which panel alphanumeric characters are entered by potentials applied to selected row and column conductors to define character blocks, is prevented or minimized by simultaneously shifting all character blocks as a unit at least one conductor position in at least one of said arrays. The panel shown has row conductors R1-R30 connected 'to individual pulsers RP1-RP30 and sustain supply 50, and column conductors C1-C65 connected to individual pulsers CP1- CP65, sustain supply 51 and erasing switch 53. Each character block in the arrangement shown is five columns in width by seven rows in height. Data from a source 60 is applied on lines 61 to a character generator 63 having seven output lines 64-1 to 64-7 corresponding to the height of a character block. Decode counter 65 counts to six and supplies pulses from clock 66 over lines 62 to step character generator 63 five times corresponding to the width of a character block, the six being for the space between character blocks. Normal erasure is effected by opening switch 60. The required shifting is effected by a "form feed" or bulk erasure signal or counterpart thereof generated and controlled by the addition of decode and switch circuitry 70, and counter circuits 80 and 95 to what is otherwise a conventional system.
