Abstract

1426826 Matrix displays INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 5 June 1973 [13 June 1972] 26631/73 Heading G5C Display apparatus comprises a gas discharge display panel with crossed conductor arrays 15 ... 19, 21 ... 29 and input electrodes 40, 45 ... 49 insulated from the gas; input gates 81 ... 85 and a pulse generator 60, inverter 62 and distributer 63. Every third conductor 21 ... 29 is interconnected to form 3 groups. The generator 60 supplies a continuous train of sustain pulses. Fig. 2D (not shown) to conductors 15 ... 19 and the distributer applies sustain pulses Figs. 2A, 2B, 2C (not shown) sequentially to each of the three groups and to gates 81 ... 85. Input data Fig. 2E (not shown) is supplied from a character generator 90 to the gates. The gates on receipt of sustain pulses apply an igniting pulse to selected electrodes 45 ... 49. The sustain pulse 121 on horizontal conductors causes a discharge in all cells previously ignited and having a retained wall charge. The next pulse 141 on conductors 21, 24, 27 causes a discharge between the lower portions of previously ignited cells on conductors 40, 23, 26 and upper portions of corresponding cells on conductors 21, 24, 27. The next sustain pulse 122 on the horizontal conductors produces a discharge across each corresponding cell and inverts the wall charges. The pulses 142 ... 149 have a similar effect as pulse 141 and move the discharges across the panel. In another embodiment data in the form of a video signal is fed into only one row and then moved vertically down; electrodes 46 ... 49 are dispensed with and horizontal conductors are connected in 3 groups as are the vertical conductors.
