Abstract

1433665 Gas discharge display panels MITSUBISHI DENKI KK 27 Feb 1974 [27 Feb 1973] 8965/74 Heading H1D A plasma display panel apparatus comprises a first laminar array of substantially parallel elongate main strip electrodes 12, a second laminar array of substantially parallel elongate main strip electrodes 18, the said arrays being disposed face to face with a gas-containing discharge gap 24 therebetween and with the electrodes of one array crossed with respect to those of the other array, at least one said array being provided with auxiliary elongate strip electrodes 50 or 52 respectively adjacent to and parallel to main electrodes of the array, circuitry 36, 40 for applying to all the auxiliary electrodes a sustaining voltage for producing across the discharge gap voltage pulses of alternating polarity, electrical insulation between one array and the gas, light-transmitting electrical insulation between the other array and the gas, and circuitry for applying selectively to main electrodes of both arrays discharge-initiating or discharge-quenching voltage pulses Px, Py or Qx, Qy. The sustaining voltages are of insufficient amplitude to initiate a discharge but simultaneous application of initiating pulses Px and Py to selected main electrodes 12 and 18 results in a discharge at the cross-point 56 of the selected electrodes, together with the establishment of a region of wall charges 58. Subsequent sustaining pulses in conjunction with the reversing wall charges produce and extinguish discharges in turn at cross-points 62, 60, 64 and back to 56. This continues until extinguishing pulses Qx and Qy applied to the selected main electrodes reduce the wall charges to zero so that subsequent sustaining pulses are unable to produce a discharge. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 7 and 9, not shown) one array of auxiliary electrodes is omitted, the operations being then effected by applying a train of bipolar pulses to the remaining auxiliary electrode array. The gas filling may be neon plus a small amount of argon or nitrogen.
