Abstract

1422734 Matrix displays PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 April 1973 [6 April 1972] 15907/73 Heading G5C [Also in Division H1] Display apparatus comprises a gas discharge panel 1 including arrays of anodes, cathodes and auxiliary anodes extending perpendicular to the anodes; the cathodes with the anodes and auxiliary anodes forming display and auxiliary discharge portions respectively; a first control circuit 27 coupled to the auxiliary discharge portion to produce glow discharges sequentially along each auxiliary anode and a second control circuit 41 coupled to the display portion to produce discharges at selected positions where anodes cross an energized auxiliary anode. The cathodes may be parallel to the anodes or auxiliary anodes, the latter are coated with resistive material to reduce current flow; a phosphor may be used to increase light emission. In operation all anodes are maintained at a potential V 1 , and circuit 27 applies pulses V 2 sequentially to produce discharges at the intersections with the cathodes 3, 5, 7. Circuit 41 sequentially applies pulses to selected anodes to produce visible discharges at intersections with the energized auxiliary anode. The period of the pulse to the auxiliary anodes is less than that to the main anodes. Between consecutive pulses a positive pulse is applied by circuit 49 to the cathodes to extinguish discharges. Grey scales may be obtained by varying the anode current.
