Abstract

1430268 Gas discharge display panels FUJITSU Ltd 5 April 1973 [6 April 1972] 16449/73 Heading H1D Dielectric layers 2 and 4 covering crossed electrode arrays mounted on base-plates 1 and 3 of a gas discharge panel have either different thicknesses or different dielectric constants such that wall charges produced by discharges between adjacent electrodes of an array are larger than those produced by discharges between opposite electrodes of the two arrays. Electrodes a 1 , b 1 , c 1 , d 1 , a 2 ... are connected to a four-phase supply so that application of a pulse to a start electrode W causes a surface discharge initiated by a priming discharge maintained continuously between keep-alive electrodes K1 and K2 to step along the array. Application of a write pulse to a selected electrode y 1 to y 4 with suitable timing (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) causes a discharge to a selected electrode a 1 , b 1 .... Layer 2 is made either thinner or of a higher dielectric constant than layer 4, and the resulting difference in the wall charges prevents spurious operation due to the commoning of electrodes a 1 and a 2 , b 1 and b 2 , &c.
