Abstract

1397454 Matrix displays THOMSON-CSF 2 Nov 1972 [5 Nov 1971] 50647/72 Heading G5C A method of operating a memory/display gas discharge panel comprises applying to all cells of the panel an activation signal S 1 of magnitude V, to cause a discharge, then a selection signal S 2 comprising a write-in signal V 2 to selected cells to maintain the discharge and to the remaining cells a neutralizing signal V 3 which extinguishes the discharge. Erasing is carried out in a similar way using the actuation signal S 1 followed by an erasing signal V 4 or a neutralizing signal V 3 . The panel is conditioned by applying a potential periodically to energize all cells. The operating circuitry includes a clock pulse generator 91, sustaining and conditioning signal generators and a selector 93 which applies either sustaining or conditioning signals. The activation signal S 1 is provided by high voltage generator and applied via another selector 102. The various levels V 2 V 3 , V 4 of the signal S 2 are provided by a modulator 105 which varies the D.C. output of generator 103. In other embodiments conditioning pulses are produced by adding pulses from the high and low voltage generators together at selector 102. The signals S 2 may be produced by the generator 104, an auxiliary pulse generator and-a delay device. The auxiliary generator produces pulses which are added to the output of generator 104, the phase being controlled by the delay device.
