Abstract

1385185 Matrix displays MULLARD Ltd 25 Feb 1972 [24 March 1971] 7754/71 Headings G5C and G4H An addressing circuit for a display device 1 including an array of light emitting elements at the intersections of crossed conductor arrays in which rows are energized for a row period in a predetermined sequence and during each period selected columns are energized; the circuit comprises a circulation memory 11 with a series output storing character data for n rows of characters; a character generator 9 which produces coded signals corresponding to the data to be displayed and a row store 9: the cycle period of the memory differing from the row period such that data for each line of characters is supplied in every nth row period. With this arrangement data for the first row is supplied during the first fill period, for the second row during the second fill period et seq and gating is avoided. The display panel 1 may comprise gas discharge cells or electroluminescent diodes. The row conductors are addressed by a submatrix 2 of driver transistors; the scanning sequence being determined by the connections to line and row decoders 5, 6, The column conductors are controlled by a row store comprising a matrix of bi-stable switches addressed by the character generator 9 and a decoder 6. The display panel can comprise an array of electroluminescent diodes.
