Abstract

1374614 Matrix displays WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 15 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 58215/71 Headings G5C and G4H A driver circuit is connected to each conductor of a gas discharge panel with crossed conductor arrays the circuit comprising a charge storage diode 301 for applying alternating polarity signals and a semi-conductor device 302 for selectively addressing the conductor. Sustain pulses are applied periodically to all conductors. The positive portion of the signal is passed via diode 301 and charges it such that it remains conducting during the negative portion and until the charge is dissipated, when it reverts to a high impedance reverse biased state. This allows write or erase pulses to be applied which are isolated by the diode from other conductors. The time that the diode passes the negative signal is preferably the same as the duration of the positive signal. To keep the times the same two resistances and a diode may be used instead of load resistor 303. The write and erase pulses are applied between sustain pulses by circuits 81, 82 in response to TV or other display input signals. These pulses render selected transistors 302 conductive to pass pulses from sources 305. In another embodiment each driver circuit comprises a charge storage diode 312 and diodes 310, 311. The drivers are arranged in a matrix connected between conductor arrays RX1,2 ... RY1,2 ... Each diode 310, 311 is connected to a positive or negative sustaining pulse source respectively. All diodes 312 are normally positively biased and connected to a write, erase pulse generator 500. A write or erase pulse is applied by first energizing selected row and column conductors RX, RY and passing current through diode 312, then applying a positive pulse to all the drivers. This passes only to the conductor of the selected driver, which has been rendered conductive by the charge stored.
