Abstract

1423622 Lamps H HUTZ 2 May 1973 [8 May 1972 17 Feb 1973] 20841/73 Heading F4R A lighting unit comprises a reflector 11 which is rotationally symmetrical about an axis parallel to the beam of light emitted by the unit and a tubular discharge lamp 15 which has a relatively short illuminating arc 25 occupying only a minor part of the total length of the lamp, the lamp extending transversely to the reflector through diametrically opposite apertures therein so that the arc is located entirely within the reflector and the ends of the lamp project outside the reflector. The reflector may consist of a spherical rear section 12 and paraboloidal front sections 14, 19, the rear section having a slot 20 to receive the lamp, whereas in a modification (Fig. 5, not shown) the front and rear sections are separable and the front edge of the rear section has diametrically opposite slots (40) to receive the lamp. The vertex of the rear section has an inwardly directed generally conical indentation (31) whilst in a further modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the tip of the indentation is removed to form a hole (34). The surface of the reflector may be highly polished or granular.
