Abstract

1291222 Vehicle headlamps W L GILLER 29 Oct 1969 [10 Sept 1968 30 Oct 1968 2 July 1969] 43020/68 51482/68 and 33378/69 Heading F4R [Also in Division H1] A lamp 40 comprising a point source of light and means focusing the light from said source at a point 41 in front of the lamp is combined with a screen 42 extending horizontally across the beam 44 near the point 41 to form a shadow area 43 within the beam. One or more of the lamps together with a screen for the or each lamp is/are mounted on a vehicle to cast the shadow 43 at a level covering the expected range of heights above the road surface of the eyes of drivers of oncoming vehicles. The lamp is preferably a high pressure discharge lamp (Fig. 1, not shown, see Division H1) with an integral reflector in the form of an internal or external coating on an ellipsoidal portion of the envelope. Alternatively a point source lamp may be mounted at one focus of a separate ellipsoidal reflector. The screen 42 may be a wire of about # inch diameter.
