Abstract

1422611 Tubular heat exchangers B G A LUND and G J N LIMEBEER 22 Feb 1973 8790/73 Heading F4S A heat exchanger comprises parallel rows of upright tubes 7 each tube being of symmetrical aerofoil cross-section with a cuspate trailing edge, and the noses of tubes in a trailing row of the tubes being positioned between the trailing edges of the tubes in a leading row, and the arrangement being such that passages of substantially constant width along their lengths (e.g. passages of width d and length l, Fig. 5) are formed between the adjacent tubes of such intercallated leading and trailing rows. The relative positioning of adjacent tube rows is such that, for each tube, the passage width d on one side of the tube is substantially twice the passage width d on the other side of the tube. The apparatus is particularly intended for use in a adry cooling tower wherein water flowing through the tubes is cooled by an air stream flowing in direction A transversely over the tubes. To augment heat transfer, a film of water may flow over the tubes to provide an evaporative cooling effect. This water is provided from a trough 17 from which the water is distributed over the tubes by baffles 20-26, Fig. 1 (and 30, Fig. 2). The baffles are of plastics material and have cut-away portions to accommodate the tubes (see Fig. 5). The baffles also act as tube supports. The tubes extend between upper and lower generally similar compound tube plates. Each tube plate consists of two spaced-apart layers of strips (constructed similarly to the baffles 21- 26) the layers providing initially an interspace in which are accommodated tie-bolts 12 and reinforcing rods (13, Fig. 4), the interspace being subsequently filled by cement 14. 15 is a layer of neoprene sealing material. On the lower tube plate the upper layer of strips (31, Fig. 3) is shaped to direct unevaporated water running off the tubes, into a collecting trough (33). The tube walls may be strengthened by indentations (40, Fig. 6).
