Abstract

1422384 Impregnating books RESEARCH CORP 26 Sept 1973 [15 Aug 1973] 45187/73 Addition to 1422385 Heading D1P [Also in Division B6] A book having paper pages and a pyroxylincontaining cover is treated to render the pages resistant to acid deterioration without causing damage to the cover, by impregnating the book with an atmosphere containing water vapour and 30-55 weight percent morpholine for 5-15 minutes at a temperature of 90-115‹F. Preferably the book is placed in an airtight treatment chamber, the chamber is evacuated to a pressure of 0.7 mm. Hg or less, sufficient aqueous morpholine solution introduced into the chamber to provide a pressure of 10-100 mm. Hg, and, after maintaining the appropriate temperature range within the chamber, for the designated treatment time the chamber is purged with air. Preferably not more than 2% of the weight of the books of morpholine is absorbed. The process can raise the paper pH (as defined in the Specification) from 4.3-5 to 6.5-7.
