Abstract

In a process for promoting and/or inhibiting the growth of micro-organisms, there are disposed on the upper surface of a porous membrane, for example, a dried gel of a mixture of cellulose esters, below which are disposed one above the other two or more separate, insert, solid carriers e.g. of filter paper, each of which is impregnated with a soluble nutrient and/or growth inhibiting medium. The carriers are first saturated or painted with a solution of the medium, then dried and sterilized. When required for use, sufficient water or a buffer solution is added to regenerate the solution which passes from the carriers through the membrane to the micro-organisms. Conditions are adjusted so that the materials held by each carrier are kept substantially separate from each other and reach the micro-organisms successively. Reference is made to the application of the process in the testing of sewage and bacteria, yeasts and fungi are referred to generally. An apparatus for the process is described wherein the carriers &c. are contained in a glass vessel. A method of sterilization of the dried carriers is described wherein these are sealed in a container composed at least partly of a synthetic foil e.g. polyethylene, and which is exposed to a gas composed partly of a sterilizing gas e.g. ethylene oxide which permeates the foil. The container is then placed in a gas not containing the sterilizing gas whereupon that inside the container diffuses out through the foil.
