[Class 130] In a process for the treatment of tobacco which is to be inoculated for fermentation with bacteria or micro-organisms, the tobacco is partly or completely sterilized by placing it in an oxygen atmosphere before the fermentation or in an intermediate stage. After the first fermentation, the tobacco may be sterilized by means of an oxygen atmosphere and then inoculated with bacteria and re-fermented.
