Abstract

1422385 Impregnating paper RESEARCH CORP 26 Sept 1973 45188/73 Heading D1P Paper is rendered resistant to acid deterioration by impregnation with an atmosphere comprising at least 8% by volume of morpholine. The atmosphere preferably contains at least one-third of its volume of morpholine or may consist substantially entirely of morpholine. The amount of morpholine impregnated into the paper may be sufficient to provide a paper pH (as defined in the Specification) of at least 7.6, preferably at least 8.5, from a starting pH of 5 or less. The paper may be contacted with the morpholine by placing it above a dish of liquid morpholine in a closed vessel and then circulating the air in the vessel to vapourise the morpholine, or by evacuating the vessel to provide a greater atmospheric concentration of morpholine. The paper may be in the form of a book, and may comprise 49% sulphite pulp, 24% bleached soda pulp, and 27% hardwood pulp, may be filled with bag clay and sized with alum-rosin. The process improves the fold endurance and tear resistance of the paper during a period of heat-aging at 100‹C.
