Abstract

1421042 Alkali metal borosilicate glass VEREINIGTE DEUTSCHE METALLWERKE AG 20 Sept 1973 [22 Sept 1972 8 May 1973] 44280/73 Heading C1M [Also in Division C7] The surface of a melt of metal or alloy (e.g. brass) is protected by covering the surface with a glass consisting of, by weight, 10-70% B 2 O 3 , 5-65% SiO 2 , and a total of 5-40% of one or more of Na 2 O, K 2 O and Li 2 O. The glass may be applied to the melt in finely divided form (e.g. of size such as to pass a 60 Ám. mesh), the glass having previously been melted and then size reduced. Glasses exemplified have softening points of 680-804‹ C. The molten glass covering is stated to provide protection against the furnace atmosphere, to reduce radiation cooling, and to assist in removal of impurities by slag or dross formation.
