Abstract

1420010 Wear-resistant coatings UNION CARBIDE CORP 11 April 1973 [12 April 1972] 17374/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A composite material for use in contacting synthetic fabrics employed in the paper-making industry, comprises at least a surface composed of substantially uniformly disposed, tightly packed spheroidal or spherical particles embedded in a plastics matrix, the size of the particles being 10 to 50 US. mesh, the surface roughness of the particles being 1 to 70 microinches RMS, and the particles being formed of metal oxide, boride, carbide, silicide and/or nitride and being disposed so that their surfaces are exposed to provide a low-friction, abrasive-resistant characteristics. Suitable wear resistant particles include SiO 2 , Cr 2 O 3 , HfO 2 , BeO, ZrO 2 , SnO 2 , MgO, Y 2 O 3 , (rare earth oxides), TiO 2 , A 2 O 3 , SiC, B 4 C, HfC, NbC, TaC, TiC, ZrC, Mo 2 C, Cr 3 C 2 , WC, TiB 2 , ZrB 2 , XbB 2 , MoB 2 , WB 2 , TaB 2 , CrB AlN, Si 3 N 4 , TiN, ZrN, HfN, VN, NbN, TaN, CrN, MoSi 2 , TaSi 2 , WSi 2 , TiSi 2 , ZrSi 2 , VSi 2 , NbSi 2 , CrSi 2 , B 4 Si 2 or mixtures thereof. The substrate may be a metal or non-metal. The substrate may also be a mixture of the particles and binder. In this case a mixture of binder and particles is fed into a die cavity then cured. Where a die cavity is used particles may form a lower layer in the die cavity with a deposit of binder on top. Smaller particles (270 Tyler mesh and finer) may be sprinkled into the interstices of the spherical or spheroidal particles.
