Abstract

1389244 Wear resistant materials UNION CARBIDE CORP 15 Feb 1972 [17 Feb 1971] 6855/72 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions Dl and F2] A wear resistant material has at least a low-friction surface of uniformly disposed spheroidal or spherical particles having a microhardness of at least 500 Diamond Pyramid Hardness and a size finer than 270 Tyler mesh, said particles being partially embedded in a matrix such that the surfaces of the particles are exposed to provide a uniformly wavy surface having a surface friction value of between 0.17 and 0.35. The particles may be metal oxides such as Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , Cr 2 O 3 , BeO, ZrO 2 , SnO 2 , HfO 2 , MgO, Y 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , rare earth oxide or mixtures thereof, metal carbides such as SiC, B,C, HfC, NbC, TaC, TiC, ZrC, Mo 2 C, Cr 3 C 2 , WC, metal borides such as TiB 2 , MoB 2 , WB 2 , TaB 2 , CrB 2 , metal nitrides such as ALN, Si 3 N 4 , TiN, ZrN, HfN, VN, NbN, TaN, CrN, metal silicides such as MgSi 2 , TaSi 2 , WSi 2 , TiSi 2 , ZrSi 2 , VSi 2 , NbSi 2 , CrSi 2 or B 4 Si 2 . The matrix may be thermoplastic or thermosetting resin, rubber. ceramic, glass or metal or mixtures thereof and is preferably an epoxy resin (Examples 1-9 11, 13), a low melting ceramic powder mixed with a liquid fugitive binder (Example 10), a phenolic resin (Example 12), or "Nichrobraz" [Trade Mark] (Example 14). Polyamides, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyethers, polyolefins, polyacrylates, polybenzimidazoles, polyacetals, polysulphones polyurethanes and glass frit are also mentioned as binding matrices. The substrate may be of plastics, metal based alloy or a metal, such as steel, aluminium, copper, brass, titanium, and MONEL (Registered Trade Mark). Steel bars or pigtails (Examples 1, 3-8, 11, 14) from textile making apparatus, "Hastelloy" bars (Example 2), Nylon rod (Example 9), and Copper rod (Ex. 10) are preferred. The substrate may be the same as the surface, i.e. wear resistant spheroids or spheres in a binder (Examples 12, 13), in which case a mixture of wear resistant particles and resin is moulded to a desired shape then cured and grit blasted to expose surface particles. Where a resin is used, the resin is applied, for example by spraying, painting or dipping, in solution to the substrate, dried, heated till tacky then immersed in spheres or spheroids. The particles may be optionally applied by sprinkling. After cooling excess particles are removed by tapping and the resin is heated to cure. An additional more dilute resin solution may be applied by dipping or capillary action, to fill interstices between the particles without fully covering them. This layer may be coloured by a dye.
