Abstract

1419691 Aluminium alloy; preparation ARDAL Og SUNNDAL VERK AS 8 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 11242/73 Headings C7A and C7D] An aluminium-based alloy containing by weight:- less than 0.05% each of other elements not exceeding 0.15% in total balance aluminium is produced by adding a zirconium aluminium master alloy to a melt of the remaining constituents at a temperature whose minimum may vary between 720 and 760‹C depending on the zirconium content, maintaining this temperature for at least 30 minutes, cooling to a temperature of 710 to 720‹C while bubbling inert gas e.g. argon through the melt to cause stirring, holding the melt at this temperature for 10 minutes without gas stirring, casting and homogenizing, preferably at 450 to 560‹C to provide a metastable precipitate of zirconium aluminide uniformly distributed through the casting which is particularly suited for weldable vehicle parts e.g. bumpers, in railway rolling stock, bridges, masts and pylons or in the construction of cryogenic containers.
